Steve Johnson - Managing director/senior vet

Steve Johnson - Managing director/senior vet

Born in Fife, Steve is very much a victim of the books written by a certain famous Yorkshire vet and from a young age, he cannot recall ever wanting another career.

Steve graduated from the Royal (Dick) Veterinary College in 1993. After a brief period in his first job in Yorkshire and itchy feet, Steve moved to Basingstoke and spent three years in what was initially a pet and farm practice, which in time evolved into purely pets, so he has spent some time getting his hands dirty in the past.

Steve then moved to Ash House Vets and spent six happy years here before an unexpected offer took him to Asia, and he spent six years working in a small animal practice in Singapore. Eventually, homesickness brought Steve back to the UK and after a short stint working elsewhere, Steve happily found himself back at Ash House Vets as they just seem to suit each other well. In 2013, Steve bought the practice from its founder, Kevin McCullen.

Outside of work, Steve spends a lot of time trying to get his garden organised, walking his dog and baking. He lives with his partner, a very wobbly Labrador called Jelly and a somewhat insane Bengal cat named Misha.
Allie Butler - Practice manager

Allie Butler - Practice manager

A few years ago, Allie had a brief stint working in a wildlife rehabilitation centre in Africa. During that time, one of Allie’s tasks was to prepare the food for the lions, cheetahs and baboons before exercising the animals and taking them for walks in the bush.

On one occasion, Allie was camped out in a man-made ant hill to observe a cheetah that was being prepared for release into the wild. The cheetah took down a wild warthog no more than 10 meters away from her yet 20 minutes later it was sitting on her lap licking her face while being taken back to the reserve.

At Ash House Vets, Allie’s particular interest is in animal behaviour, and she gained her companion animal diploma in 2006. Allie also enjoys nurse clinics and lab work.

Allie lives with her partner, young son and a very large ginger tabby cat who was adopted through the local branch of Cats Protection.
Nikkie Mann - Head nurse and clinical coach

Nikkie Mann - Head nurse and clinical coach

Nikkie has seen many strange things in her career. From an elephant belonging to a travelling circus being brought to the surgery; to finding a horse standing in the waiting room. She once helped anaesthetise a koi carp and held it whilst a stickleback which it had tried to swallow was removed from its gullet.

Nikkie is verging on officially being a ‘mad cat woman’ having successfully hand-reared over 30 kittens, yet amazingly only keeping one, which lived to the ripe old age of 17.

Nikkie joined her first practice in 1984 and qualified as a nurse in 1987. Nikkie has a keen interest in nutrition, having gained her certificate in small animal nutrition in 1989. Nikkie enjoys running nurse clinics having gained both her pet advisor and veterinary health advisor qualifications. At Ash House Vets Nikkie is the clinical coach (formerly known as an assessor), her duties being to supervise the training and progress of our student nurses. Nikkie truly loves being a veterinary nurse and looks forward to going to work to see what each day will bring.

Nikkie and her husband live with 4 cats, a 3 legged Jack Russell terrier and a variety of Cats Protection foster cats.
